Welcome to Algebra Studio: Balance Lab!
Over a series of engaging, hands-on lessons, Balance Lab develops and extends students’ understanding of linear equations, using research-based methods that blend physical interaction with mathematical reasoning and communication.
In Part 1 of Balance Lab, students start by working in teams to build a balance scale. This activity engages students who like to work with their hands, and gives them a physical, concrete experience of balance. Students then investigate different weight combinations that create equivalence and write equations to represent the relationships.
In Part 2, students create physical equation models on a mat with cups (variables) and cubes (constants) and use the model to solve one- and two-step equations.
The preview kit includes all of the physical materials you’ll need, including the balance scale and the equations mat, as well as access to slides and mini-lesson videos that provide step-by-step guidance. The project is easy to lead and does not require special training.
You’re eligible for the preview if:
You are a math or STEM teacher, coach, specialist, coordinator, or supervisor.
You work with:
Advanced 3rd through 5th grade students, OR
6th-8th grade math/STEM students, OR
Algebra I students
You’re able to provide feedback that will help us improve the project before its full release
If you meet these requirements, let’s talk! Please complete this form and we’ll be in touch to schedule a short conversation, answer your questions, and talk through next steps.
